Biological Dentistry

Holistic or Biological dentistry is an approach that focuses on a patient’s entire health. This includes a patient’s emotional and physical health, and treatments that are a blend of conventional and natural approaches to deal with oral disease. Essentially, this is a health and wellness-based treatment philosophy that is a mix of natural healing and modern science. Your overall health and your dental health work hand-in-hand to determine your quality of life. Oral health has been conclusively linked to a number of other health conditions, including diabetes, heart disease and obesity. By focusing on optimizing your oral health, you can directly impact your overall quality of life. Furthermore, the early diagnosis of dental problems may shed light on other health concerns before they advance.

Your center for oral health and wellness.

If you’re passionate about health and wellness, your oral health care should be a high priority. Get in touch with us today to get started!

Many of the products and services we make available to you are influenced by our natural and integrative approach. In fact, when it comes to any dental restoration, we will always opt for a metal free solution, if available, and educate you as to your options. You will receive digital radiographs that utilize safer, lower levels of radiation to give you instant x-ray images of your teeth. These images, our intraoral camera, pH testing, and laser cavity detection allow you to see and understand your condition and your treatment options. This way, you can make the decision that is best for you. We also promote bio-compatibility testing when indicated, so that we can make sure your body likes the materials we use. When disease and damaging conditions are avoided, or at least caught at their earliest stages of development, your teeth and gums remain healthy, strong and beautiful. Beginning with your new patient evaluation, and continuing with each visit, Dr. Jackson and her team rely on experience and technology to ensure your optimal health, while educating you about how to remain healthy and avoid the conditions that damage your teeth.

Safe Mercury Removal

Most dental amalgam restorations have a certain percentage of mercury in them, which may put a patient’s health at risk due to mercury vapors. When amalgam restorations have been removed in the past, traditional treatment approaches can result in patient exposure to these vapors. The Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique (SMART) follows protocols to protect the patient, dentist and office. The strategy is based on proper water irrigation, high-volume suction, masks as well as other strategies backed up by scientific strategies. Please visit the IAOMT website for more information regarding the SMART protocol, https://iaomt.org/for-patients/safe-amalgam-removal/

Ozone Treatment

One of the most complex and perplexing problems in dentistry today is infection control. The mouth is full of microorganisms normally living in balance with the entire body. Under certain conditions pathogenic or “disease causing” microorganisms can become the dominant life forms, thus creating infection. What if we had an agent that could treat and eliminate the infection and, in addition, support the surrounding healthy tissue without toxic side effect? We do now with ozone therapy for dentistry.

How does ozone therapy work?

Ozone, when introduced into the body, creates what is called a “transient oxidative burst”. The infective microorganisms have no defense against this reaction, and, as a result, die. Thus, ozone disinfects the area treated, both safely and effectively, without the side effects or antibiotic resistance potential of traditional antibiotics.

Ozone Therapy Benefits

The “oxidative burst” induces a multitude of natural biochemical and physiologic reactions. These reactions include:

  • Better blood flow
  • Enhanced immune response
  • And a more rapid healing response
  • No chance of allergic reactions

What can Ozone Therapy help treat?

Some of the dental issues Ozone can help treat include, but are not limited to:

  • Periodontal disease
  • Infected Teeth
  • Tooth Decay
  • Cavities

Ozone Treatment utilizes ozone gas, water, or oil to reduce decay, gum disease, and infections. It involves using ozone in the affected site to kill the pathogens.

Airway Centered Dentistry

Breathing is life, and an insufficient airway can cause us to be depleted of the air required to meet our body’s needs. Breathing problems can produce health issues elsewhere in your body, which can vary considerably from individual to individual. Are any of these issues problematic for you?

  • Do you suffer from clenching, grinding, or gritting of your teeth?
  • Do you have TMJ pain, clicking, or popping in your jaws when you open and close your mouth?
  • What about chronic headaches, neck aches, or backaches?
  • Does your tongue have teeth marks on it from pressing your tongue up against your teeth all the time?
  • Do you snore?
  • Have you been diagnosed with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)? As many as 30 million Americans suffer from OSA while reportedly an estimated 10 million more remain still undiagnosed.
  • Do you wake yourself up gasping or choking?
  • Is your blood pressure elevated? Are you on high blood pressure medication?
  • What about your blood sugar? Is it high?
  • Do you suffer from thyroid disease?
  • Are you struggling with your weight?
  • Have you had teeth removed for orthodontic reasons?
  • Do you have a history of having to have an expander for braces?
  • What about your digestion? Is it great? Or do you have bowel issues?
  • What about anxiety or depression? Do you feel anxious often?

If any of these apply to you, you should determine whether airway issues are involved.

Often, one of the early warning signs of sleep apnea & sleep disordered breathing is the disturbance of the natural sleeping cycle by snoring, grinding, clenching or gritting. The snorer likely doesn’t know these disruptions are even occurring. While snoring itself can keep your bed partner awake, it can also represent a serious health risk. And grinding, clenching or gritting of the teeth will destroy teeth, either by wear, fracture, or abfraction.

The DNA Appliance System helps deliver a natural remodeling option for the anatomy around the neck and head (airway and jaw). Essentially, this process captures the body’s ability to self-restore through an oral device that is worn for a limited amount of time. The mRNA Appliance System helps treat sleep apnea through correct jaw placement. This helps open up the airway. The system is comfortable and it can create results in a relatively short amount of time.

Snoring and Sleep Apnea

Snoring and sleep apnea can lead to serious health conditions. We always encourage our patients to take steps to prevent this from happening. There are holistic approaches we recommend such as using a saline spray and breath right strips to open up airways, alterations to diet, changing sleeping positions, tongue exercises and eliminating alcohol and smoking. Additionally, we use the DNA and mRNA appliances, which are non-surgical options that focus on the craniofacial structure. The technology stimulates the necessary growth of the lower and upper jaws to help reduce or eliminate snoring and sleep apnea.

Facial Head and Neck Pain

If you are experiencing head and neck pain, we try to take a holistic approach. What this means is we try to find the source of the problem, including TMJ, sleep apnea, orofacial myofunctional disorders, tongue tie, poor occlusion (bite) or teeth grinding. We don’t take an “isolation” approach. Instead, we get right to the root cause and how those causes could be affecting the entire body and lead to problems in the mouth.

Holistic Dental Cleaning

A holistic dental cleaning includes the use of an ultrasonic device that sprays ozone water while it brushes off calculus or tarter on teeth. This water also helps eliminate bacteria and plaque. The process, which is performed by a hygienist, cleans out the bulk of the issues negatively effecting oral health and then hand instruments are utilized to make sure the surface of the teeth are completely cleaned. The cleaning may also include laser bacterial reduction, laser curettage, and ozone gas therapy. Following this, a fluoride free polish is applied. Your hygienist will also spend time with you reviewing oral hygiene instructions that will ensure your oral cleanliness continues to remain optimal.

Stay-at-home orders are lifting!

Welcome to Smiles of Orange! As Orange County stay-at-home orders begin to lift, the information below highlights our new safety protocols following the California Department of Public Health. These new protocols are in addition to our existing, extensive, infection control protocols:

  1. Pre-appointment screening questions: We will ask a series of questions before your appointment over the phone or via email.
  2. Taking your temperature: Before entering the treatment room to check for fever. Everyone, including employees, will be screened with a health questionnaire and forehead temperature reading daily.
  3. Check-in: Text or call us when you arrive and wait in your car. We are limiting the number of people in our reception area and have removed magazines.
  4. Face masks: Each person in the office will be required to wear a mask (including us), our team will let you know when to remove the mask for your appointment.
  5. Parents & Guardians: We ask that only one guardian attend the appointment with their dependent.
  6. We have new medical-grade HEPA air filtration units in every treatment area and throughout the office!
  7. Once in the operatory we will ask you to pre-rinse with a hydrogen peroxide-based rinse to lower the pathogens in your mouth.
  8. We will continue to use high speed suctioning and isolation tools when generating aerosols (Purevac HVE, DryShield, Rubber Dams)
  9. We will have additional PPE including hair coverings, long jackets, faceshields and N95 or higher masks

We are committed to keeping you safe and healthy! We anticipate resuming regular hygiene visits by May 26, 2020 and are rescheduling many patients that we had to cancel due to the closure. Thank you for your patience as we reach out. We can’t wait to see you!
